another world is possible and we pledge to make it real....

power words to repeat to yourself every morning. throw away the pen and pad and simply be the poem. first verse is where the moneys at.

To manifest your dreams before you manifest your fears.
To navigate beyond the treachery of self despair.
To find the balance between all you sense and all you see.
To find the patience and the strength it takes to let it be.
To stand amongst the crowd and have the strength to hold your own.
To throw away the pen and pad and simply be the poem.
To rise above hatred to love through seeming contradiction.
To seldom take a side and learn to compliment the friction.
To bring about the change within that we can’t live without.
To shift and re-arrange ideals and learn to deal with doubt.
To voice the victory and unlearn ways of self-defeat.
To learn the value of, “yo, fuck the words just ride the beat”.
To leave the comfort zones of all you know to all you feel.
To step beyond the void and realize the unknown is real.
To re-imagine every obstacle as just a means of honing craft and learn to laugh at failures funny dream.

DVD packaging for the Mel Stanforth retrospective DVD "Reunion". I designed the DVD face for this project and dealt with having it correctly printed. I also helped build the functionality of the DVD itself.

did you start that band?

finally found a version of this with acceptable sound quality.

'synecdoche, new york' blew my mind apart and left me in the quiet theater to clean up the mess. what an absolutely stunning 2 hours of my life. i would sit through that every single time i had the chance. it will take many viewings to pick up all the little bits and pieces and to really fully understand what was going on. love at first sight.

--

eagles of death metal live were a ton of fun. boots electric himself being a carolina boy (south) worked very hard to get the crowd hyped and to show his hollywood bandmates what we're all about. and seemingly, what we are all about is partying and getting shitty. i did my part to portray that image.

i have filled my brain with music and ideas and things. time to focus and get some work started/done.

Anyways. Trying to stay frequent with updates. We'll see about that.

cocoon

my sketchbook is currently filling up with drawings and short comics of moths. consider the cocoon hatched; tswob has taken a new form.

to beings greater than us, that see us as insignificant bugs, would icarus be considered a moth? he was a man/caterpillar, entered jail/cocoon, emerged a winged man/moth, flew towards the brightest thing he could find.

at work. next door a building, connected to ours on friday, is being ripped apart by a backhoe. it keeps making the building shake. they should probably ask us to vacate, but they haven't.

started 3 submissions for a local skateboarding zine called Pink Crack last night. figured it was a good place to test out some of the ideas i have doodled but never developed. the buddha manga i've been reading has seeped the use of hatching and ziptone well into my brain. so i made a quick digital ziptone pattern and threw it on these. i think i'll use a higher resolution, fancier version on some upcoming pieces because its really effortless grayscale.

the first of the doodled, a ghost town and the memory of every mountain and cloud you have seen this year. also, a shell hole featuring a timeline of growth.

old idea, first time i've tried it on actual paper instead of in my mind. if i do these, i would want them under the pen name 'tracy jordache'. they are glorified traces (see: people magazines defaced at my house or the moby piece a month ago), and then modified. so that explains the tracy. on tracy, i want to slap 'jordan' at the end because i love tracy morgan. instead, i'll go for the other hot shoe of the 80s/90s, the jordache.

paul mccartney.

not an old idea, yet. its still fairly fresh in the way things i am currently making look.

wanted*e

been spending more time than I'd like to in the movie theater. i don't really care for seeing movies in the theater unless its something that I really feel i need to see this instant and not wait til the DVD release. That would be the case for Batman and Wes Anderson movies.

anyways. I saw Wall*E on monday. totally adorable. i'd be fine with seeing it again. and I almost got my wish. went to see Wanted on wednesday. Hated the comic book, but was hearing from people at work that the movie was a lot of fun and such. I had the time to kill, so I went. As the trailers started rolling the first one was for some new CGI mouse movie. This was very weird to me. A G-rated trailer playing before an R rated movie. Then came the CGI dog trailer. Then the CGI chihuahua trailer. Then the CGI something else. I knew what was happening here. Then came the CGI short "Presto" which plays before Wall*E. I have never left my seat at the movies in order to complain or report problems, but I sort of had to. They were playing Wall*E in the Wanted theater. I assume this means the Wall*E theater was running the first reel of Wanted, but I really hope not.

Our Consolidated theater was recently bought by Regal theaters. And it has sucked hard since this buy out. I loved seeing stuff at the Consolidated theater. Everything was always right and smooth. Regal is like the plague. If I screwed up at my job as much as they do, I'd have been fired 10 times over.

So, Wanted was boring and not good to me. The first 30-40 minutes are enjoyable because it really has fun being a movie. Anytime you see a guy smack another guy with a keyboard, and the keys and one of his teeth fly in slow motion to spell out "fuck you" for the audience, you know they are having fun. and then the second after that, they stop having fun. for an hour and a half.

got a free ticket out of the experience tho. so, i'll either get to see Hellboy II or Batman II for free. That's a ray of light in the shit colored sky that is Regal theaters.

happy ID4.

Always great to see...

I figured it was time to try out some more manga. I've read Akira and some of Nausicaa, so it was time to try out the "Manga God"/"Godfather of Manga" Osamu Tezuka.

hypothesis, color, evening 1

went ahead and drew this and began coloring. going alright so far, I think. the unlit windows strike me as an interesting castle turret shape. burkert comes from burkhart (German and Dutch: from the medieval personal name Burkhard, composed of the elements burg ‘fort’, ‘castle’ + hard ‘hardy’, ‘brave’, ‘strong’). castles. some things are blanket super hard, and you don't even plan for them. i planned for lit windows and I got unlit castles.

hypothesis: where you hide, 2008; pencil & digi

8x5=40

Been slacking. Here's some digital sketches of some personal pieces I am working on. Also have 2 freelance things, so these may take this week and next to finish.

The penultimate piece in the 40 series, titled "the onion" in my sketchbook. I posted a sketch of this a couple weeks (a month?) ago, but it has changed since then. It's now 8x5, with an alternate drawing that repeats 40 times. As seen here:

The actual "onion" drawing is the one thats different. I think it would be mainly shown as the single panel, but when possible, as all 40. Close-up of the onion:

Possible layer effect to be applied to the clouds. The way they look in the previous 2 sketches will look ugly once all that foghair is colored. Just something:

--

Since it is way easier to draw (no repeating pattern), this is the actual next piece I am working on:

Similar to the beach house piece in that this is also an old idea that I am finally getting around to doing.

Honorable Mention

Just found out about this today via Email.

Vamp. Cactus is Honorably Mentioned.

I think what happens next is there a competition of all the honorable mentions for a give time frame, and some of these can not slip through the cracks again.

Pretty neat.

spore some sugar on me

Downloaded the demo of the Spore Creature Creator tonight. I will buy the full version, but want to wait til I get a new mac.

Here's my first creature. He's called Venumare.

I'm sure that this Creator is a small taste of the full game, but the taste is delicious. This thing is easier to use than any thing I can imagine. Build your creature. Super simple. Record a video of him doing things with a built in uploader for YouTube. Snap pics that you can mail to people's emails. Upload your creature to the online database of creatures for others to download/etc. It's all pretty fancy.

Habit forming

Trying to keep track of a hobby so that I can pinpoint when it starts to become too much. Don't mind me.

between the bars

home from busch gardens. the griffon is amazingly fun in the front row. the coaster has a 205ft vertical drop, 90 degrees straight down. they stop the coaster right over the lip of the edge so that the front row is facing straight down and just stuck there, legs dangling in the wind. then they release and you are floating in between your harness and chair until you hit the loop. from there on its crazy fun on one of the smoothest coasters i've ever ridden.

also apollo's chariot was awesome.
